Sandgate is a small coastal village immediately west of Folkestone, sitting on the shoreline of the English Channel between Folkestone and Hythe. It has a distinct character, with a single main street — Sandgate High Street — running along the seafront with independent shops, cafes, and pubs.
The village is known for its antique shops and art galleries, and has a reputation as one of the most attractive coastal villages in Kent. The nearby Sandgate Castle is a coastal artillery fort built by Henry VIII in 1539–1540 and is one of the best-preserved Tudor castles in the country.
Sandgate is particularly popular with cyclists on the Sustrans National Cycle Network Route 2, which runs along the coast. The village has a strong independent food and drink scene, including the Fat Raj restaurant and Sandgate Cove Bakehouse.
